Brownback Seeks Apology for Email Citing Catholic Faith

WASHINGTON --

Republican presidential hopeful Sam Brownback said rival Mike Huckabee should apologize for a supporter's "prejudiced whisper campaign" against him for being Catholic.

 

Huckabee issued a statement Tuesday night that didn't apologize for the remarks but said they were neither approved nor condoned by his campaign. He said he was glad that the supporter had issued his own apology and clarification.

The supporter, a pastor in Windsor Heights, Iowa, had sent an e-mail to Brownback supporters pointing out that Huckabee is an evangelical Protestant and Brownback is not. Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, is an ordained Baptist minister. Read Entire Story

Brownback Says Evangelical Pastors Heading His Way

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback met Wednesday with influential evangelical leaders and said religious conservatives are moving in his direction as they learn more about his anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage views.

Brownback's meeting with 15 to 20 evangelical pastors came as the Kansas senator maps out his strategy for the Aug. 11 straw poll in Ames.

"It's typical in an election that people hold back and want to get a good feel for the candidate," said Brownback. "Now we're getting within eyeshot of Aug. 11 and they're breaking and a lot of them are breaking our way."

Brownback Courts Support of Catholics

(Des Moines Register) - U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback turned to conservative Roman Catholics Thursday to organize support for his presidential campaign and spread what he contends is the most authentic social-conservative message in the GOP race.

Brownback, of Kansas, unveiled his "Iowa Catholics for Brownback Leadership Team" at his West Des Moines headquarters, flanked by Iowa Catholics and members of his campaign. The 144-member coalition will work to organize Republicans as Brownback's campaign braces for the Iowa GOP straw poll Aug. 11. Read Entire Story

Brownback Gets Backing of Religious Conservatives in Iowa

More than 50 religious conservatives in Iowa will lead an effort to persuade Republicans to support presidential candidate Sam Brownback.

In a statement, Brownback said the conservatives "share my goal to rebuild the family and renew the culture" and could play an important role in his bid for the GOP nomination.

Chuck Hurley, a former state legislator and a leader among the state's religious conservatives, will head Brownback's "Faith and Family" committee. Hurley heads the conservative Iowa Family Policy Center, but he stressed that role is separate from his efforts for Brownback, with whom he has ties that date back to college days in Kansas.
